Many of us hear about taking flax, but can't figure out the best way. Of course it depends on your lifestyle, but since mine is pretty crazy I'll give you some suggestions.
First, I don't take flax oil because it has a very short shelf life. Even in really good health food stores where you know the owner, you can get a bad bottle. Or you open it and don't use it. It goes rancid fairly quickly. Grind the flax instead.
Being a control freak, I want my flax to be cheap and fresh. Buy a coffee grinder. Any $10-15 one will work. If you can get it second hand even better.
Buy flax seeds, it doesn't matter brown or golden, and keep them in the freezer or frig. Grind as much as you will use in a week. For the three of us, when I'm not baking royale, a cup will do. I put it into an opaque container in the frig.
Food has very little difference in flavor with the flax, so sprinkle it on your salad, oat meal, soup and hide it burritos, lasagne. You only need 2 tablespoons a day. Since we make our own nut butters, my husband adds the flax to that, so we get it every time we do a PBJ. And by the way, if you have never had fresh walnut or cashew butter you are really missing out. It takes that lowly PBJ to the next gastronomique level.
If you are on the road, there are these Flax Packs you can get at a lot of health food stores. They have small bags of 2 tablespoons of flax. You can open them in the morning and put some in your smoothie, close them with a paper clip and use them with your lunch salad and toss on your sandwich. Done for the day.
